NOTE: If you are using System 7.5 or later you can use the
MacWiseェ guide help which has an Index and Topics to help you
find the information you are looking for more quickly.
The MacWiseェ Help file must be inside of the MacWise Folder.
To use MacWiseェ guide help, close this window and select
MacWise Guide from the ? Menu at the top right of your screen.
____________________________________________________________________
MacWise emulates Adds Viewpoint, Wyse 50, Wyse 60, Wyse 370, VT100,
Televideo TV925 and Prism terminals.
The Viewpoint emulator supports Enhanced Viewpoint mode.
(All functions are available from the Menu bar)
FILE MENU:
Use CommToolBox
When enabled, this option uses the CommToolBox tools in the
System Extensions folder for Connections and file transfers.
The CommToolBox allows connections to networks such as Ethernet
and Appletalk and recognizes extra ports on serial cards.
Break
Sends a 200ms Break signal to the Host computer.
Open ...
Opens a text file to be read. Use this option to read a text file
that you have downloaded or a file you have recorded in the Capture
mode. Also note that there is no Horizontal scrolling
capability in the text reader. Any data wider than 80 columns will
not be shown but can be read by a word processor.
Print ...
Prints a text file. Use this option to print a text file that you
have downloaded or a file you have recorded in the Capture mode.
Print Screen
Prints the contents of the screen. Select Best or Faster print modes.
(Draft will not work for a screen dump.) Print Screen Cannot be used
from the Text Reader screen.
Printer On
Turns the printer on. All data that comes to the screen will be
printed. Printing does not start until the Printer is turned off.
If "Use Clipboard for Print Buffer is selected as a preference,
then data is held in the Clipboard until printing begins.
You can toggle Printer ON and Off with COMMAND =.
The host computer can also send a command to your Mac to toggle
the printer on and off.
Printer Setup
If you select Printer Setup from the File Menu and enable
"Form Feed from Host = New Page", page breaks will occur each time
MacWiseェ gets a form feed (Char 12) from the host. You can also
specify a word that will cause a page break when ever it appears
at the beginning of a line.
Quit
Exits MacWise
EDIT MENU
Paste
You can paste clipboard data from your Mac to the Host computer. Data
gets into the clipboard by using the Record to Clipboard feature under
the Capture Menu. You can also use other Mac programs and Cut data, then
Paste the data to the Host using MacWise.
Paste Delay
If you don't have type-ahead on your host, enter a delay time between
lines and characters. This will give the host enough time to accept each
line and character of data before the next one is sent during the paste
operation. The default is 4/60th of a second between lines and
1 microsecond between characters. (You can try setting both of these to
zero for a faster paste operation. If some characters are missing then
set the delays higher).
Clear Application Screen
You can clear the screen at any time by pressing Command K. Or select
Clear Application Screen from the File menu. The screen will be cleared
and the cursor will move to home position. Clearing the screen also
clears the Macintosh input buffer of any data coming from the Host
computer. Only rows 1 through 24 are cleared.
Clear Message
This clears any messages which may have been sent from the host.
Reset Fkey Display Re-draws the function keys at the bottom
of the screen.
Clear Entire Screen Clears all rows
Paste Delay
Enter the delay between characters and lines sent to the host during
a Paste transmission to the host. This is necessary if your host
cannot accept the data as fast as MacWise sends it.
Preferences
Remember Window Positions - MacWise will remember the size and
position of your MacWise window when you close the window or
quit and restart MacWise.
Use Clipboard for Print Buffer - If "Use Clipboard for
Print Buffer" is not selected then the disk will be used to
temporarily store data as it is being printed and the temporary
file will be deleted as soon as printing is completed.
If this option is selected then the clipboard will hold data
waiting to print.
DIALER MENU: Quickdial lets you store your most frequently
dialed number and dial it quickly with Quickdial.
You can also maintain a separate phone list and dial
from the list. Use Command L to see the list.
Hang-Up
If you are using a Hayes compatible modem you can hang-up by
selecting Hang-Up from the Dialer menu.
Tone Dialing
Most phone companies provide tone dialing capability. Use this
if possible because it is faster than pulse dialing.
Pulse Dialing
Simulates dialing a rotary phone instead of a push button phone.
Use this if your phone company does not support tone dialing.
Disconnect Modem Upon Quit
Causes the modem to hang up when you quit from MacWiseェ.
In more technical terms, DTR and DSR are dropped. It is
a good idea to keep this enabled. Some programs such as
Applelink and Dove Fax get upset if DTR/DSR are left on
and think that the modem port is still in use. This option
is useful for non-multifinder users who want to quit and
re-enter MacWiseェ without hanging up the modem. Changes
take effect when you dial out through the modem.
Modem Initialization String
You can enter a character string that MacWiseェ will send
to the modem before dialing. There are four pre-defined
strings included for the PowerBook computers. Just click
on a button to activate them. Normally a Modem string is
not needed, so the default is no string. The PowerBook may
intermittently not dial the phone unless you use the modem
string provided. A Custom button is provided for you to
enter a custom string for non-apple modems.
Settings MENU: Select baud rates from 300 to 57600.
Select the word length and parity.
Select standard or ASCII display. The default is
standard. Ascii display shows you the Ascii codes
for each character displayed.
Enable Xon/Xoff. Make sure the Host is also enabled.
Serial Port Activation
MacWise is capable of releasing the serial port when it
is not active. (not active means that you clicked on
another application window or you selected メHide MacWiseモ
from the System 7 menu.) When you select メSerial Port
Activationモ from the Settings menu, you will have three
options to choose from:
1. メAlways keep serial port active (open) when MacWise
is runningモ. This is the normal default setting.
Clicking on other windows or hiding MacWise will
have no effect and the serial port will remain open.
2. メRelease Serial Port when MacWise window is not
activeモ. Closes the serial port whenever the user
clicks on another window or hides MacWise. This
option does not drop DSR/DTR which is important if
you are using a modem and donユt want to hang up
(Disconnect) the phone connection.
3. メRelease Serial Port and Drop DTR & DSR when
MacWise window is not activeモ This option does
the same thing as option 2 except that DSR/DTR are
dropped causing a modem phone connection to hang
up. This option is necessary to be compatible
with some other communications programs such as
Applelink and America Online. These programs wonユt
work if DSR and DTR have not been dropped.
Emulate MENU: You can choose from seven terminal emulators;
Prism, Viewpoint, Wyse 50, Wyse 60, Wyse 370, TV925 or VT100.
The Viewpoint emulator also supports Enhanced mode.
Your choice of emulation depends on which terminals your
host supports. If you select the incorrect emulator, all
kinds of strange characters will be scattered on the
screen . All five emulators support cursor positioning,
erase commands, inverse video and Underlining. The Viewpoint,
Wyse, TV925 and VT100 emulators support graphic drawing characters
and 80/132 column codes from the host. You can select
Viewpoint or Wyse function keys.
(Read the file on disk "Function keys"
for a chart showing Mac keys to use for Fkeys)
International Characters
Allows you to select special character sets from many
countries. These sets work in 7-bit and 8-bit mode.
NOTE: IBM Set2 is an 8-bit-only character set used in
European countries. Make sure that ヤStrip 8th bitユ is
not checked under the Emulate Menu when using this set.
Video attributes are displayed in color on Macintosh II
models as follows:
Attribute Color Effect
_______________________________________
Inverse video Blue Inverse
Underlined Blue Underlined
Blinking Red Bold
Dim Green Normal or dim
Message Red Normal
NOTE: Small Macs without a color screen will display Blinking in
in a bold font. Dim characters will show up as dim if
"Enable Dim Characters" is checked under the Emulate menu
in the Video Attributes dialog box.
Generic mode is just a TTY emulator and does not support any
special functions.
Tymnet Mode for Prism
This needs to be enabled to see the logon message when
logging into Tymnet in the Prism emulation mode. This
needs to be disabled when running some host programs
that use the upper 128 characters for video attributes.
Note: This mode will always be enabled when using any
international character set other than US ASCII
when you are using Prism emulation.
Backspace = Delete
Causes the Mac backspace key to send Delete (127)
instead of Backspace (08) to the host. This is needed
for VT101 mode when communicating with a Vax Host. It
may be used with any of the emulation modes.
Enable Dim Characters Video Attributes
When this is enabled, dim characters sent from the host
will appear dim on the Mac screen.
This should be enabled for Macs with black & white screens.
Macs with color screens will display dim characters in
a green color whether this is enabled or not.
Caps lock ON
Causes all characters typed on the Mac keyboard to be
in upper case. (Overrides the Caps Lock key on the
keyboard.)
Strip 8th bit
Strips the 8th bit from characters sent to the Mac from
a host computer. This is required for many bulletin
board systems. It allows you to use 8 bits no parity
but not use the 8th bit (characters above 127).
In general:
In the USA, Strip 8th bit (is checked)
In Europe, do not strip 8th bit (not checked)
Use large font for 132 col mode
Uses a size 9 font when in the 132 column mode instead
of size 6. This is useful for large two-page monitors
that are capable of displaying 132 columns with a larger
font.
Function Key Options
Has user selectable options for programmable function keys.
If you put a check mark in the box labeled "Double-clicking
on a Function Key changes its function or title", you will
be able to double click on the function keys at the bottom
of the screen to edit them.
You can create custom function key sets and save them. This
allows you to keep separate key sets for each application
you run on your Host machine.
Edit Function Keys
Allows you to edit all 32 function keys (16 shifted and
16 non-shifted) whether they are visible at the bottom
of the screen or not.
Capture MENU: The capture buffer can be turned on or off by holding
down the Command key and pressing the space bar.
When the capture buffer is on, all data is recorded
and held in a buffer and saved to disk in a file named
Recorder. You can Make a new capture file on disk,
Select an existing capture file on disk, or
Delete a capture file from disk.
Data is always appended to the existing file.
When you Make or Select a capture buffer it becomes
the current buffer. If you delete the Recorder file, it
will remain on disk but it's contents will be erased.
RECORD TO CLIPBOARD
When you turn this option on, all data that comes to the
screen will be recorded to the Clipboard for use in other
programs. If you are using Multifinder or Quick keys to
go to the other program, make sure that you turn this
option off to properly close the clipboard first.
Convert Tabs to Carriage Returns
When this is enabled, all tabs from the host are converted
to carriage returns before the capture file is saved to disk.
SCREEN CAPTURE SOUND
Turns on the Camera shutter sound for screen captures.
Any time you want to capture a section of the screen, just drag
the mouse and lasso the part of the screen you want to copy to
the clipboard. The captured screen becomes a picture that can
be pasted into any other program. You can turn the mouse cursor
into a crosshair cursor by holding down the Option key.
NOTE: to Capture text into the clipboard as editable text you need
to use the RECORD TO CLIPBOARD option.
SAVE CAPTURED TEXT AS:
Select the type of document you want captured files to become
on disk. Then each time you capture data to disk, a special
creator type will be assigned to the file. It will become a text
file that can be double-clicked from the finder to launch the
associated program and load automatically. If the document type
is not available as a button to select from, you can enter any
4-digit creator type. (Youユll need to find out what the creator
type is for other documents)
NEW LINE ON RECEIPT OF CR
Causes Carriage Return/Line Feed whenever a Carriage Return
character (decimal 13) is detected from the Host. This only works
when MacWiseェ is in a recording mode capturing data to disk.
This option is usually enabled when you are capturing coded files
containing special characters (such as bold, underline etc) to be
imported into word processors.
NEW LINE ON RECEIPT OF LF
Causes Carriage Return/Line Feed whenever a Line Feed
character (decimal 10) is detected from the Host. This only works
when MacWiseェ is in a recording mode capturing data to disk.
This is the normal default mode.
Special MENU: You can send control characters to the host by holding
down the Command key and any one of the control
characters in the Special Menu. The control character
is sent and the Macintosh input buffer is cleared.
Command 1 (Xoff) stops a listing and waits for Command 2 (Xon)
to resume.
Command 3 (Control C) used on Dec and Unix computers
Command 4 (Control U) used on Dec computers
Command 5 (Control X) exits from Host listings.
Command 6 (Control Z) used by Dec and Unix computers.
You can select Standard sized Window or Multifinder sized
Window. The Multifinder window is a smaller window that
allows you to view the disk icons in the finder. Note that
you may also resize the window by dragging the lower right
corner with your mouse. If you have a monitor larger than
13 inches, the MacWiseェハwindow will automatically pop out
from behind the menu bar an can be moved around on the screen.
16-POINT FONT AND LARGE WINDOW
This is an option for large monitors only. If your monitor
is not at least 823 pixels wide, this option will be dimmed
and you won't be able to use it. It is especially useful
for Radius monitors with 78 DPI which shrink the screen and
make it hard to read the standard 12-Point font.
Send Carriage Return Upon Startup
This will send a carriage return to the host each time
MacWise is run. If you are connected directly to the host
you will get a logon prompt.
80 Column screen - Selects 80 column screen and large font.
128 Column screen - Selects 128 column screen and small font.
(Used on small Mac screens). Will accept
132 column codes from host but last four
characters will be truncated.
156 Column screen - Selects 156 Column screen and small font.
(Used on Mac II models or any mac with a
larger screen)
Screen Textwrap - Causes characters to wrap to the next line
if no carriage return is seen from the host.
Typing System Delimiter Marks
System Delimiter characters are used by programmers or system managers
using the Hostィ editor.
You can type System Delimiter characters on your Macintosh keyboard by
holding down the Option key and one of the following letter keys.
Option Key Delimiter
B Start Buffer [
S Subvalue Mark ¥
V Value Mark ]
A Attribute Mark ^
G Segment Mark _
< Backtab
Option and Command Key
T Sends control T
Option and Shift Keys
~ Sends escape (for Mac keyboards with no escape key)
i insert key (insert key for Viewpoint and Wyse)
